As the cleantech competition application deadline approaches, more applications are expected on the final day,April 26, at 5:00 P.M. The goal of the competition is to reward university students who submit innovative clean technology ideas that can solve our local environmental challenges. The competition, organized by the Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC), the Swiss Embassy, SICPA and Strathmore University, aims to address environmental issues that contribute to climate change and its consequences.

The competition’s goal is to increase awareness of various technologies that can alleviate environmental challenges in our society. It underlines the need to view the cleantech industry as profitable, fulfilling, and capable of creating wealth and jobs. In addition, the innovation challenge encourages students to create groups and brainstorm ideas and solutions for dealing with climate change. The competition allows Kenyan university students to present their cleantech solutions and ideologies. This is intended to excite students’ curiosity and encourage them to think creatively and in a sustainable way about current and future environmental challenges.

To be named the winner of the Cleantech Innovation competition, entrants must pass a rigorous vetting process. All submitted proposals will be subjected to a vigorous vetting process, with just twenty applicants moving on to the next round. The top twenty applicants will then be chosen to participate in a three-day online boot camp. They will receive technical assistance in creating pitch decks and conveying their inventions to investors. Only the top five proposals will advance to the final round, to be held on May 19, 2022, and will face a panel of judges.

The competition is accessible to all current university students in Kenya who are enrolled in a recognized higher education institution. Students with innovative ideas that will help conserve the environment and lessen the effects of climate change on society are encouraged to apply. This means that the competition aims to award the winners and generate climate-smart ideas and assist in their implementation.

The winner of the Cleantech Innovation Challenge will receive Ksh 2 million in prize money. Furthermore, all finalists will receive national attention for their innovations, assistance in developing pitch decks, and the opportunity to pitch their business ideas to an international panel of judges. In addition, each contestant will get access to KCIC’s e-learning platform and the chance to compete in the Climate Launchpad Competition, the world’s largest green business ideas competition.

Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) is at the forefront of advancing climate-smart solutions in Kenya and abroad to achieve a more sustainable future. The Cleantech Innovation Competition is one of KCIC’s and its donors’ many programs targeted at reducing the effects of climate change. It provides the country’s youth with the required platform to continue the battle against climate change while showcasing their innovations.
