Sustainable Waste Innovation for a Future in Transition Programme – SWIFT Programme

This is a 3 years programme aimed at supporting 110 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya’s waste management sector. The programme is supported by IKEA Foundation and implemented by Kenya Climate Innovation Center. It will focus on implementing innovative business models that support Kenya to practice effective waste management through circular economy approaches. The interventions within the programme will support the private sector (SMEs) with business advisory support, compliance for market access, technical assistance, access to finance solutions, sustainability integration, policy and advocacy support, and technology solutions.

The aim is to generate over 2000 direct and 4,000 indirect jobs, enhance the livelihoods of over 5,000 households, and generate revenues of up to USD 10 million in the pre-urban and Urban economies. The Programme will work with the national government and five counties namely Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Uasin Gishu to support the development of policies and regulations to incentivize private sector engagement in waste management and the circular economy. The project will also carry out awareness creation on solid waste management practices and circularity through various channels.

The programme focusses on providing the necessary resources, knowledge, and expertise to empower waste management SMEs to survive, thrive and contribute to economic development. The programme will strive to address barriers limiting the participation of youth and women and encourage inclusion during implementation.
