The Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat (VDS) and the Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on exploring opportunities for building resilience and enhancing low carbon development through promotion of climate technologies and innovation in Kenya.

The signing which was officiated by the VDS Director General Dr. Julius Muia and KCIC Chief Executive Officer, Edward Mungai,  honors their commitment to further expand cooperation in the field of clean technology and innovation.

The agreement sets forth the institutional framework for cooperative activities in clean technology and innovation for development purposes, in fields of common interest, on the basis of equality and mutual benefit. The Agreement further elaborates cooperative activities in innovation to include commercially viable research and development, commercialization of technologies, incubation of start-ups, in addition to common cooperative activities in creating an enabling environment.

In the agreement, VDS recognizes KCIC as the official implementing agency of the initiative: “Promote climate technologies and innovation” under the Programs and Projects for Medium Term Plan III 2018-2022. This includes development of innovative solutions in energy, water and agribusiness as well as supporting entrepreneurship in Kenya.  Both organizations will also collaborate on sustainable development initiatives with an aim of actualizing the agenda 2030.

Speaking during the signing, Dr. Muia noted that the partnership will be key in responding to the effects of drought and the emergencies that come with climate related calamities.

On his part, the KCIC CEO Mr. Mungai echoed his sentiments on the importance of including innovations in dealing with the climate change scourge, adding that developing and supporting locally available solutions will play a big role in supporting Vision 2030 and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The two organizations shall collaborate on enterprise support, awareness creation on climate change and sustainable development, partnerships, capacity building on the SD and establishing an enabling environment for clean technology ventures.

VDS has laid out a transformative agenda to accelerate the implementation of Medium Term Plan III (MTP III). Among the VDS prioritized initiatives that will be undertaken during MTP III to build resilience and enhance low carbon development is the agenda to promote climate technologies and innovation. The Climate Change Directorate will be the lead agency in coordination of this program.

KCIC has provided incubation services, grants and seed funding to more than 166 Kenyan social enterprises with the purpose of scaling up innovations, and supporting climate mitigation and adaptation. The purpose is to allow locally adopted solutions to be scaled up and become sustainable and profitable businesses creating jobs. KCIC’s resources, skills and expertise is ideally suited to achieving VDS’s goals under the initiative.
