PRESS RELEASE

Largest Global Green Business Ideas Competition kicks off 2018 edition

Nairobi, 8 August 2018– ClimateLaunchpad is the world’s leading green business ideas competition. It is set up to help aspiring entrepreneurs grow their green ideas into global businesses. ClimateLaunchpad welcomes innovations in renewable energy, energy efficiency, food and agriculture, water, transportation, industrial technology or any other way to tackle climate change.

Frans Nauta, founder of ClimateLaunchpad: “Climate change is solvable. Not with one cure, we need – and there will be – thousands of big and small cures. That’s why ClimateLaunchpad boosts aspiring green entrepreneurs to global success. We train them and give them international stage. Our mission? Fixing climate change, one start-up at a time.

Founded in 2014, the competition has grown from European to global coverage. Last year, Kenya along with other countries like Australia, India, and Azerbaijan joined ClimateLaunchpad, and over a 1,000 green ideas were entered. The 2018 edition runs in 46 countries across the globe.

This Thursday and Friday, 9-10 August 2018, selected participants from Kenya will start off their rigorous training with a 2-day Boot Camp to be held at Kenya Climate Innovation Centre.  The Boot Camp will be followed by six Coaching Sessions to prepare for their National Finals. The top-3 of all competing countries will battle it out at the Global Grand Final in November 2018.

The world’s top-10 best ideas win access to the Climate-KIC’s Accelerator, a programme focused at cleantech commercialization. The overall winner of the Grand Final also receives a cash prize of €10,000, the runner up gets €5,000 and the team that comes in third place wins €2,500.

Last year, Bio Alkanol Gel consisting of Boniface Jiveri and Dr. David Musyimi from Maseno University won the top position cash prize of €10,000 at the 2017 grand finals. Their concept involved the fermentation of waste fruit peelings converted into eco-friendly fuel for domestic use.

ClimateLaunchpad is part of the Entrepreneurship offerings of EIT Climate-KIC, the EU’s main climate innovation initiative. Over 100 partners, such as Accenture, Benard Schulte Shipmanagement, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Hellenic Bank, Microsoft, PWC, Sparebank, Volvo and World Wide Fund, support the competition.
