At the same time, large quantities of agricultural waste, particularly rice husks and crop residues are often discarded or burned. This not only contributes to environmental pollution but also represents a missed opportunity to create valuable agricultural inputs that could improve soil health.
Victoria Agrotech Ltd, established in 2018, identified this gap and set out to transform agricultural waste into organic biofertilizer that restores soil fertility while promoting climate-smart farming practices.
With support from Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) under the GreenBiz Programme, Victoria Agrotech Ltd implemented interventions aimed at strengthening its production capacity and scaling the delivery of organic fertilizer to smallholder farmers.
The company invested in key production equipment, including a rice husk carbonator machine and a shredder. These technologies significantly improved the efficiency and quality of converting agricultural waste into biochar-based fertilizer inputs, replacing manual and time-consuming processes with a more scalable production system.
To enhance product quality and market readiness, the company also introduced eco-friendly packaging materials. This improved product presentation while reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices.
In addition, Victoria Agrotech secured essential raw materials such as rice husks and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) frass to ensure consistent production and to prepare for peak agricultural seasons. This strengthened supply chain reliability and enabled the company to meet growing demand from farmers.
Beyond production improvements, the enterprise expanded its engagement with smallholder farmers through awareness creation and distribution activities. Farmers were introduced to organic fertilizer solutions and trained on the benefits of improving soil health through sustainable inputs.
The implementation of the GreenBiz-supported project has significantly strengthened Victoria Agrotech’s operational capacity and its impact on farming communities.
The company now directly reaches over 20,000 smallholder farmers, who benefit from access to organic fertilizer that improves soil fertility, enhances crop performance, and supports more resilient farming systems. Many farmers are increasingly adopting sustainable soil management practices that reduce dependency on chemical inputs.
The investment in production equipment has improved efficiency and enabled the company to scale its operations to meet growing demand. This has positioned the enterprise to better serve farmers during peak agricultural seasons.
The project has also contributed to inclusive job creation, supporting 7 jobs, including women and youth engaged in production and distribution activities, thereby strengthening local livelihoods.
Through support from KCIC under the GreenBiz Programme, Victoria Agrotech Ltd has strengthened its ability to convert agricultural waste into high-quality organic fertilizer that supports both environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity.
The enterprise is now better positioned to scale its operations, expand its reach to more farming communities, and deepen its contribution to climate-smart agriculture in Kenya. Continued focus on market expansion and farmer engagement will further enhance its long-term impact and sustainability.
