Introduction

Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC), with the support of the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), is implementing the GreenBiz Programme (2021–2025). The programme focuses on increasing commercialisation and scaling up climate-smart innovations, which in turn contribute to the creation of decent jobs, increased access to low-carbon energy sources, increased community and household resilience to climate change, as well as other environmental and social benefits. GreenBiz supports enterprises within KCIC’s five thematic areas: renewable energy and energy efficiency, water management, climate-smart agriculture, commercial forestry, and waste management. By targeting these sectors, the programme contributes to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). To accommodate different stages of enterprise growth, GreenBiz offers two tailored pathways. The Incubation Programme supports start-ups and early-stage enterprises that have at least developed a prototype, providing the tools and coaching needed to validate their concepts and progress toward commercialisation. The Accelerator Programme targets growth-stage enterprises with proven business models and annual revenues above KES 2 million, offering highly individualised support to prepare them for rapid scale-up and investment readiness. Enterprises selected under the GreenBiz Programme benefit from a comprehensive support package, including business advisory services, mentorship and coaching from sector experts, access to market intelligence and technical facilities, and engagement in policy and regulatory advocacy to strengthen the enabling environment for green businesses. In addition to technical support, the programme facilitates access to finance, both directly, through targeted financial support, and indirectly, by providing transaction advisory services to connect enterprises with external financing such as debt, grants, and equity investments. Impact to Date USD 20M mobilized for growth and upscaling of green businesses. 150 enterprises supported through incubation and acceleration. 3,000 jobs created in green sectors.
