In 2021, Patrick Kimathi and David Ngaracu founded Carbon Zero Mobility with a clear vision: to transform Kenya’s transport sector through clean, efficient mobility solutions. Like many early-stage businesses, the journey began in uncertainty, shaped by product refinement, limited resources, and the challenge of entering a competitive market.
In its initial phase, the company was still developing its product. While prototypes of its electric motorbikes had been created, they were not yet ready for commercial use, and the business had not started generating revenue. The focus at the time was on refining the product and understanding the needs of key users, particularly boda boda operators (motorcycle transport operators) and courier and delivery companies.
With support from the Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) under the Greenbiz Programme, a support initiative focused on scaling climate-smart innovations that contribute to job creation, increased access to low-carbon energy, and stronger community resilience to climate change, the company received financial support, along with market testing, brand development, and strategic business advisory services aimed at strengthening its readiness for commercialisation.
Patrick Kimathi, Co-Founder of Carbon Zero Mobility, said, “The support helped us move from just testing our concept to properly preparing for the market. We were able to structure our product, understand our customers better, and approach market entry with more clarity and confidence than before.”
Today, the company has taken that step. Carbon Zero Mobility is now importing, assembling, and distributing its Dominion electric motorbikes, which are designed for transport and delivery use. The business has also begun generating revenue from its first commercial sales.
To support this growth, the company has put in place key systems and structures. A fully integrated financial and inventory management system now allows it to track stock, costs, and sales in real time. A clear market entry strategy is also guiding how the company reaches customers and expands its operations. The team has grown as well, with staff supporting sales, business development, and technical operations such as assembly and maintenance.
Beyond the product itself, the company has established the infrastructure and governance systems needed to support long-term growth. This includes a functioning charging system that allows customers to recharge batteries conveniently, as well as strengthened legal and governance structures that support compliance, partnerships, and future investment.
From a startup refining a prototype to a business actively operating in the market, Carbon Zero Mobility’s journey reflects what is possible when innovation is matched with the right support, laying the foundation for a more sustainable transport future.
