The Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) announces the formal closure of the GreenBiz Programme, a five-year initiative implemented with financial support from DANIDA to strengthen climate technologies and related innovative business models in Kenya.
Since 2021, GreenBiz has supported 206 enterprises across five climate-critical sectors: renewable energy and e-mobility, water management, waste management and circular economy, nature-based solutions, and sustainable agriculture. Through incubation, acceleration, business advisory, technical assistance, catalytic finance, market linkages, knowledge products, and policy engagement, the programme helped entrepreneurs strengthen enterprise readiness, attract financing, and scale climate-smart solutions.
By mid 2025, the programme had deployed KES 117.9 million through Proof of Concept and Matching Grant support, while also helping enterprises mobilise additional financing and market opportunities.
The programme also contributed to wider ecosystem development through policy dialogue and sector intelligence. This included support to e-mobility policy processes, contributions to energy policy review discussions, knowledge products, and a cleantech sector assessment that highlights Kenya’s growing green enterprise opportunity as well as persistent barriers related to finance, policy implementation, inclusion, and skills.
GreenBiz closes, having demonstrated that green enterprise support can produce results at both enterprise and ecosystem levels. It has strengthened the evidence base for climate-smart SME support and has left behind a foundation of stronger enterprises, stronger partnerships, robust knowledge products, and greater visibility for climate innovation in Kenya.
KCIC acknowledges Danida, government institutions, supported enterprises, partners, service providers, and other stakeholders whose collaboration contributed to the successful implementation of the GreenBiz programme.
As the closure process continues through June 2026, KCIC remains committed to preserving programme knowledge, engaging stakeholders responsibly, and building on the momentum created through GreenBiz. For programme closure enquiries, please contact: greenbiz@kenyacic.org
