Introduction
KCIC implemented a Productive Use of Solar Energy (PUSE) Pilot Program titled, ‘Financing Solutions for Local Productive Use of Solar Energy Entrepreneurs in East Africa’s Agriculture Sector’. The two-year pilot (January 2023 to December 2024) was funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and implemented across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The programme aimed to overcome barriers to the uptake of solar technologies in key agricultural value chains, with a focus on dairy, horticulture and aquaculture.
The programme supported 30 enterprises for the pilot, comprising 10 enterprises from each of the countries, to drive the adoption of PUSE technologies while creating decent job opportunities, strengthening community resilience to climate change, and delivering broader social and environmental benefits. This was achieved through highly tailored, enterprise-specific support.
Expected Outcomes
Maximise the economic and social benefits of solar energy access.
Advance SDG 7 by increasing access to clean, affordable, and renewable energy.
Improve the economic sustainability of rural electrification projects and renewable energy markets.
Support enterprises to scale PUSE solutions, create jobs, and strengthen community resilience.
Impact to Date
407 direct jobs created (target 160) and 1,200+ indirect jobs supported.
23,516 new customers reached, marking a 68% increase in PUSE uptake (target 40%).
USD 2.05M revenue growth recorded among participating enterprises (19% increase).
USD 763,256 external financing mobilised (target USD 50,000).
342,543 tonnes CO₂e emissions reduced (target 100,000).
Through these results, PUSE contributed directly to multiple Sustainable Development Goals, notably SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 12, SDG 13 and SDG 15, by fostering enterprise growth, expanding access to renewable energy, and strengthening resilience in rural economies.
