In a landmark partnership that promises to reshape the landscape of climate change communication in East Africa, the Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) and Nation Media Group (NMG) have joined forces in a strategic three-year collaboration aimed at amplifying climate action narratives and fostering sustainable development across the region.

The partnership, formally signed on February 5, 2025, will leverage NMG’s extensive media reach across television, print, radio, and digital platforms to deliver in-depth coverage of climate innovation, sustainable enterprises, and environmental conservation efforts throughout East Africa.

“This collaboration represents a significant step forward in our mission to catalyze climate entrepreneurship in Africa,” said Joseph Murabula, Chief Executive Officer of KCIC. “By partnering with the region’s leading media house, we’re creating a powerful platform to showcase climate solutions, inspire action, and drive meaningful change in how our communities understand and respond to climate challenges.”

The partnership comes at a crucial time when despite climate change posing an existential threat to the region, public awareness and understanding remain notably low, hampering effective climate action initiatives. Through this collaboration, both organizations aim to bridge this critical knowledge gap by delivering accessible, engaging, and impactful content that resonates with diverse audiences across East Africa.

Under the agreement, NMG will develop comprehensive media coverage including television features, radio programs, digital content, and print stories that spotlight KCIC’s work in supporting climate innovations and sustainable enterprises. The partnership will also facilitate the creation of specialized segments focusing on circular economy and climate enterprises, particularly targeting small and medium-sized businesses.

The collaboration will extend beyond traditional news coverage to include knowledge cafés, media roundtables, and public engagement forums designed to foster dialogue and build understanding around climate issues. These initiatives will particularly focus on engaging youth and local communities, who are increasingly recognized as crucial agents of change in the fight against climate change.

KCIC, which has supported over 3,000 enterprises in the climate space, will provide NMG with access to its extensive network of climate entrepreneurs, experts, and innovators, ensuring rich, ground-level storytelling that showcases real solutions and tangible impact. The organization will also share its wealth of research, policy insights, and technical expertise to enhance the depth and accuracy of climate-related reporting.

“This partnership represents a significant step forward in mainstreaming climate action narratives,” noted James Sogoti, General Manager Commercial at NMG. “By combining KCIC’s expertise in climate innovation with our media reach and storytelling capabilities, we’re creating a powerful platform for driving awareness and inspiring action on climate change across the region.”

The collaboration aims to achieve several strategic objectives, including demystifying climate change for the public, accelerating narratives of change, and highlighting the crucial intersection between environmental sustainability and economic development. A particular focus will be placed on promoting climate entrepreneurship as a vital pathway for addressing environmental challenges while creating economic opportunities.

As East Africa continues to grapple with increasing climate-related challenges, this partnership represents a timely and strategic intervention that promises to transform how climate change is communicated, understood, and acted upon across the region. Considering the pivotal role communication plays in advancing change, it is safe to say that a more sustainable and climate-resilient future for East Africa is within reach!
