Introduction – DREEM Programme

 

The Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC) is a social impact organisation operating in the climate space committed to supporting micro and small enterprises and driven by innovation. Through this program, ​​KCIC (and its clients) will directly and indirectly contribute to the achievement of SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 9(Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and ​​SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

KCIC with funding from the Mott Foundation is implementing a Distributed Renewable Energy Ecosystem Model (DREEM) HUB and Spoke Model project in Kenya over a three years period, aimed at reducing Greenhouse gas emission that causes climate change by facilitating the increased adoption of solar energy for Productive purposes within Key agricultural value chains while enhancing community livelihood transformation through youths and women agrisolar entrepreneurship development, skill development, deploying innovative financing and enhancing market access opportunities.

 

Program Objectives include:

  • Enhancing the adoption of productive use of solar energy services among underserved agrisolar
    entrepreneurs within farmer cooperatives and groups
  • Improve access to affordable Productive use of Solar Energy (PUSE) financing among youth and women
    entrepreneurs within cooperatives and farmer groups in the dairy and horticultural value chains through the
    establishment of a self-sustaining Revolving PUSE loan Fund.
  • Establish a well-governed and independent distributed renewable energy ecosystem hub organization to
    coordinate and provide long-term support for underserved agrisolar entrepreneurs within Kenya's PUSE sector
    Program Target group.

    The programme focusses on providing the necessary resources, knowledge, and expertise to empower waste management SMEs to survive, thrive and contribute to economic development. The programme will strive to address barriers limiting the participation of youth and women and encourage inclusion during implementation.
