Kenya Climate Innovation Centre, in a collaborative effort with the Embassy of Switzerland, SICPA and Strathmore University, has launched the Cleantech Innovation Competition to strengthen idea stage businesses in the cleantech sector to address environmental problems.

The competition, whose applications are now open, will identify and reward university students in Kenya with innovative clean technology ideas.

The competition focuses on creating awareness of available technologies that can be implemented to solve our local environmental problems. Further, the innovation challenge encourages students to group together and explore ideas and solutions that could be designed sustainably to respond to climate change.

The competition is a platform for higher education students in Kenya to pitch their cleantech innovations. It seeks to appreciate the cleantech sector as profitable, rewarding, capable of generating wealth, and creating jobs. This is expected to arouse the student’s enthusiasm and provoke their dynamic thought processes about the sector’s current and potential job opportunities.

Upon the closure of the call for applications on April 26, 2022, all the potential projects (those that will respond to the call for proposal) shall go through a vetting process which will see the qualified ones recruited into the competition. Twenty applicants will be shortlisted to undertake a three-day online boot camp where the entrepreneurs will receive technical support in developing pitch decks and communicating their innovations to investors. This will culminate in presenting the best five projects to a panel of judges on May 19, 2022.

Benefits

The winners of the Cleantech Innovation Competition will receive a cash award of two million Kenya shillings. In addition, all finalists attending the BootCamp will get country-level publicity for their innovations, support to develop pitch decks, and a chance to pitch their business ideas before an international panel of judges. Moreover, each participant in the competition will get access to KCIC’s e-learning platform and a chance to participate in the world’s largest green business ideas competition- the ClimateLaunchpad competition.

Eligibility Criteria

The Challenge is open to all current university students at a recognized Higher Education Institution anywhere in Kenya. For your innovation to be accepted, it must be in the ideation stage and must clearly demonstrate how it addresses a local environmental problem.

Information session

On Thursday, April 14, KCIC, in conjunction with the Embassy of Switzerland in Kenya and Strathmore University, invites faculty, staff, and students across universities in Kenya to join a two-hour virtual info session to learn about the application process and engage in critical dialogue about our future. Experts and implementing partners will also be available to answer questions and clarify any concerns regarding the competition. The online webinar will start at 10.00 A.M. The next few years will be crucial for the state of climate change in this century. Such programs that foster climate action are more important than ever. Visit the Kenya Climate Innovation website, for details and to apply for the competition.
