What Design Can Do (WDCD) in partnership with Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC) is seeking creatives, both small and big designers, entrepreneurs who can eco-innovate solutions to prevent waste generation, cut Carbon emissions and promote the use of waste as a resource.
“This global application is set run from 1st February 2021 to 1st April 2021. We call upon all students, designers and creative entrepreneurs to submit proposals for waste recycling solutions that can help mitigate the impact of climate change which is slowly by slowly driving us towards a climate crisis,” Dr Edward, the CEO of KCIC, said during the launch.
The #NoWasteChallenge# which brings together innovators from all over the world is set to address the disastrous impact that waste has on the society, environment and at the same time, a valuable stock of resources that can be exploited with the main objective of rethinking our production and consumption cycle.
The winners will receive $10,000 prize for their commitment and innovation in local recycling. This package will help them develop, strengthen and scale up their already existing projects that continue to benefit the society.
Even as countries progress towards achieving a higher standard of living, overall waste production is set to increase accordingly if the current production or consumption patterns persist. We, therefore, need to come up with innovative ways that can help decouple waste from GDP to ensure sustainable use of the world’s resources, with consequent climate benefits.
“The main objective of this competition is to encourage and advocate for zero-waste recycling in the production of goods and services as an alternative production to new sources, because less energy, fewer Carbon emissions and better social services are provided by the former. I feel that we are capable of innovating new sources of production,” Edward adds.
Maximizing recycling, minimizing wastes, reducing consumption and ensuring products are made to be reused, repaired or recycled into the earth’s environment without dire consequences, will mitigate climate change and humans will have a fighting chance at building a future that works for both people and planet.
