Last week, on the 28th of March 2019, the Association of Sustainability Practitioners of Kenya (ASPK) organized its second meetup since its inception in August 2019. The 2nd edition had 70 members in attendance and was held at Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi. The theme was on the future of the workplace culture.
The three main speakers all have an impressive backgrounds in Sustainability. The first speaker, Rosemary Ngure, has over 20 years of experience in the legal world. She is an accomplished corporate legal and sustainability professional with extensive experience in delivering effective legal and compliance advice to departmental heads within a variety of businesses. She thrives in the intersection between law and sustainability. Her expertise stretches into environmental, social & governance risk management (ESG), sustainability, and investment monitoring in established legal frameworks. Ngure elaborated on the importance of organizations to value the employees through the culture that they set up at the work place. She emphasized that employees appreciate transparency, ethics and work-home balance being high on the list of things that retain them.

The 2nd speaker, Serrainne Nyamori is a Trainer, CSR & Sustainability Consultant who is passionate about solving business challenges by addressing the value – impact gap they face in the communities they work in. She has extensive experience in capacity building and program management in the corporate and Non-profit sector. Currently, she is the founder of Sustainability Africa, a social impact firm in Nairobi, Kenya. She highlighted 10 simple ways of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Karen Basiye is a Sustainability, Shared Value and a Corporate Environment Specialist with 15 years’ experience. Over the years she has worked at the National Environment Management Authority and Safaricom where she developed competencies in Leadership, Governance, Strategic Thinking, Sustainability Reporting (both Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), Social Policy, Corporate Environmental Management, Environmental Management Systems including ISO certification and Environmental policies, Environment Risk Management, Environmental Compliance Assessment, Energy and Climate change policies, Strategies for Sustainable Development, Integrated Product Policies, Sustainable Consumption and Production and integration of Sustainable Development Goals into company strategies. Karen shared her journey and Safaricom’s into sustainability in 2008 till today.

The quarterly meet ups are a great platform for sustainability practitioners to gain knowledge and ideas in the practice. The essence of the meet ups is to network and get industry contacts to guide your career growth in the field of sustainability.
